WASHINGTON – Fred Schaeffer of Poughkeepsie, who originally came up with the idea for the Walkway Over the Hudson, has been honored with a national Rails-to-Trails Conservancy award, the Doppelt Family Rail-Trail Champion for 2013.

Fishkill residents Venkat Chaluvadi and his wife, Madhavi Chaluvadi, were among the 1,300 people who gathered to dance on the Walkway Over the Hudson this weekend in an attempt to break into the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest chorus line.

While the attempt to break the existing record — set in Long Beach, Calif., in 2004 by 1,628 participants — fell short by just over 300 people Saturday, organizers said the event brought people together and helped raise money for park improvements and local scholarships.

“It was a valiant effort,” said Walkway spokesman Steve Densmore, “Everybody had a lot of fun.”

Last June, more than 2,500 people danced the hokey pokey on Poughkeepsie’s Walkway Over the Hudson, breaking the Guinness World Record for “Longest Single Line of Dancers.” This year, staffers at the Valley’s newest state park hope to smash an even more ambitious record: that for “Most People in a Chorus Line.”

If enough people show up ready to dance Saturday, the Walkway Over the Hudson could once again make the Guinness Book of World Records.Walkway organizers and choreographer Livia Vanaver, co-founder of the Vanaver Caravan dance troupe in Rosendale, are leading an effort to create the longest chorus line.

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Officials with the Walkway Over the Hudson are looking for people willing to kick up their heels in an effort to make the Guinness Book of World Records.

The nonprofit group Walkway Over the Hudson is a looking for few good people to make some history. About 3,000 should do the trick.

The Walkway Over the Hudson has been hailed as a dog friendly park since its opening in 2009, so it is only fitting that this dog haven in the sky will now host Dog Adoption Day Saturday, April 20th.

When Camoin Associates studied the potential economic impact of the Walkway Over the Hudson in 2007, they used a projected attendance figure of 267,000 visits a year. Even, at those numbers, the predictions were positive; the Walkway State Historic Park draws more like half a million visits a year—and those are just the ones who bother to sign in.
