WASHINGTON – Fred Schaeffer of Poughkeepsie, who originally came up with the idea for the Walkway Over the Hudson, has been honored with a national Rails-to-Trails Conservancy award, the Doppelt Family Rail-Trail Champion for 2013.

No new record for longest chorus line on Walkway

Fishkill residents Venkat Chaluvadi and his wife, Madhavi Chaluvadi, were among the 1,300 people who gathered to dance on the Walkway Over the Hudson this weekend in an attempt to break into the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest chorus line.

While the attempt to break the existing record — set in Long Beach, Calif., in 2004 by 1,628 participants — fell short by just over 300 people Saturday, organizers said the event brought people together and helped raise money for park improvements and local scholarships.

Walkway Over Hudson misses world record for chorus line

Over 1,300 people danced in a chorus line Saturday morning, in a world record attempt at the Walkway Over the Hudson.
In 2004, 1,624 participants in El Dorado Park, Long Beach, California set the current record for longest chorus line.
Saturday's effort fell short by about 300 people.
“It was a valiant effort,” said Walkway spokesman Steve Densmore, “Everybody had a lot of fun.”

Dedicated dancers: Walkway organizers attempt to break another world record

Last June, more than 2,500 people danced the hokey pokey on Poughkeepsie’s Walkway Over the Hudson, breaking the Guinness World Record for “Longest Single Line of Dancers.” This year, staffers at the Valley’s newest state park hope to smash an even more ambitious record: that for “Most People in a Chorus Line.”

When Camoin Associates studied the potential economic impact of the Walkway Over the Hudson in 2007, they used a projected attendance figure of 267,000 visits a year. Even, at those numbers, the predictions were positive; the Walkway State Historic Park draws more like half a million visits a year—and those are just the ones who bother to sign in.
